Implement International Mother Language Day City Celebrations and Dedicate a Monument
The Issue
Petition to officially celebrate and commision a monument commemorating the International Mother Language Day in the City of Brantford
As a Bangladeshi Diaspora, we deeply value the diversity and multiculturalism that our city embodies. It is what makes our community vibrant, diverse, and wholly unique. We propose to celebrate our diversity even more visibly by officially commemorating the International Mother Language Day.
In an effort to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism across the globe, UNESCO declared the 21st of February as the International Mother Language Day in 1999. This year marks the 25th anniversary of that proclamation. Furthering this legacy, we propose that our city officially recognize and celebrate this day, cherishing the numerous languages that contribute to our multicultural identity.
In addition, to further signify our commitment to celebrating our city's linguistic and cultural diversity, we propose that the city designate a small plot in a local park or anywhere deemed appropriate (no larger than 10'x10') for the monument. This monument would serve as a symbolic representation toward the significance of mother languages and a tribute to our multicultural roots.
Through these actions, we can further solidify the principles of respect, understanding, and diversity that underpin our community. Let’s make our city the beacon of multiculturalism and linguistic diversity by acknowledging and celebrating International Mother Language Day. Please sign this petition to support these initiatives.
