On 27th February 2024, a student bicyclist's regular commute to school turned into a horrifying ordeal. As he crossed the intersection of FM471 and Talley, he was nearly hit by an aggressively honking car. The panic led him off the road and into a large muddy ditch where he narrowly escaped being hit again by an 18-wheeler construction vehicle operating in the ditch. This traumatic incident left him visibly shaken before he could proceed to his school.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident but one among many close calls at this dangerous intersection which serves as a route for students traveling to/from Straus Middle School & Harland High School on Far West Side, San Antonio, TX.

The lack of adequate pedestrian safety measures at this intersection poses serious threats to our children's lives every day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), intersections are responsible for over half of all pedestrian-related accidents.

We cannot wait for another near miss or worse - a fatal accident - before we act. We demand immediate safety improvements such as traffic calming measures, a pedestrian walkway, clearly marked crosswalks and signs warning drivers about school zones and pedestrians crossing.
