Save the West Hollywood 6! Coyotes in West Hollywood
The Issue
Pupdate! I just got a call from the City of West Hollywood and from the contractor. And guess what! The coyotes are safe! This company only uses humane hazing and one way doors! Once the coyotes are safely hazed and evicted, and the petition gets more signatures, I will close the petition! Thank you signers and thank you City of West Hollywood! You are a gold standard city for coyote coexistence!
Something curious has been happening at a condo complex in West Hollywood. Without signing a lease or stopping by the management office, a family of coyotes has moved into the building, much to the surprise of local residents. These unexpected tenants have been seen lounging casually on balconies and roaming the property—an unusual but intriguing sight in the area. https://www.weho.org/Home/Components/News/News/12218/23
The story began in 2024 when construction halted on the 22-unit complex, leaving an unfinished structure standing empty. This pause created a perfect opportunity for a small family of coyotes, possibly searching for safe territory, to make a home in the city. Today, the group is comprised of about six coyotes, appearing daily as if they belong.
While residents may be surprised, they are also understanding and compassionate. These coyotes are not aggressive; their actions reveal them as being part of a close-knit family. Yet, their presence raises safety concerns and calls for action. It's crucial to remember that this building became abandoned through no fault of the coyotes. Now, we must find a way to coexist with them.
We propose a series of humane measures to guide the coyotes towards safer habitats. Hazing techniques, which use sound and light to redirect them without harm, can be employed. Additionally, one-way doors could facilitate their departure by preventing re-entry once they've exited the premises. Project Coyote can help.
This approach aligns with the values of our community, showing respect for both the wildlife and our neighbors. Taking responsible and humane action now can serve as a model for other communities facing similar situations in urban settings.
Support our call to implement humane and effective strategies that prioritize both community safety and animal welfare. By signing this petition, you stand with us to ensure the protection and ethical treatment of coyotes, while fostering a peaceful coexistence. Please sign and share this initiative to help create a viable, compassionate response to this unique situation.
