My heart breaks each time I think about how many animals lose their lives due to unnecessary and outdated testing protocols for rabies. Rabies, as you may know, is a deadly zoonotic virus that poses a significant public health risk, prompting strict regulations around animals, particularly those traveling between countries. However, the current reliance on post-mortem tests, specifically those requiring brain dissection, places a cruel and unnecessary burden on animals.

The current protocol allows humans to undergo humane, point-of-care antemortem tests for rabies, yet unfortunately, our animal companions do not receive the same consideration. An antemortem rabies test for animals would not only save countless innocent lives but would also facilitate the movement of pets between countries, thereby supporting immigrant families who wish to bring their beloved pets with them. Presently, strict bans are placed on dogs entering various countries because of the lack of these necessary and humane testing options.

As our understanding of animal empathy and their rightful place as family members grows, so must our policies and practices. Scientific advancements have already provided us with safe and effective antemortem testing methods, which have been denied to animals for far too long. Countries such as the United States have begun evincing a shift towards more compassionate treatment of animals in their medical protocols, setting a precedent we should duly follow.

By implementing such tests, we can prove our commitment to compassion and science, improving the lives of both animals and humans in need. It's crucial to appeal to the House of Commons to re-evaluate the outdated regulations that currently dictate rabies testing protocols and to begin permitting humane, antemortem point-of-care tests for animals.
