Implement Gender Neutral Bathrooms with Urinals in Lewisville ISD

Implement Gender Neutral Bathrooms with Urinals in Lewisville ISD

The Issue

In Lewisville, TX, schools are facing a serious issue with bullying against transgender students. My school, in particular, has been a battleground for this harassment. Transgender kids are often targeted, ridiculed, and made to feel unsafe simply for using the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity. This toxic environment not only affects their mental health but also their academic performance and overall well-being.

According to a 2019 study by the Trevor Project, 39% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past twelve months, with a significant percentage indicating that feeling unsafe at school contributed to this mental health crisis. By establishing gender-neutral bathrooms, we can take a step towards ensuring safety and reducing the anxiety and distress these students experience daily.

Gender-neutral bathrooms with urinals would not only accommodate all genders but also promote a sense of belonging and acceptance, reducing incidents of bullying and discrimination. Schools in other cities, like Philadelphia, have successfully integrated such facilities, leading to a more inclusive environment. The National Center for Transgender Equality reports that inclusive policies lead to better mental health outcomes for transgender students.

Let’s take actionable steps towards inclusivity in our educational environment. By making all school bathrooms gender neutral and equipping them with urinals, we can support our transgender community and set an example for other districts. Stand with us in making Lewisville schools a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

The current bathroom setup forces transgender students into uncomfortable and vulnerable situations, exacerbating the bullying problem. Many of them avoid using the bathroom altogether to escape the scrutiny and harassment from their peers, which is not a viable long-term solution.

A practical and inclusive step to address this issue is to implement gender-neutral bathrooms equipped with urinals. Such facilities would provide all students, regardless of gender identity, a safe and accommodating space. Gender-neutral bathrooms are gaining recognition in educational institutions across the country as they foster an environment of acceptance, promote inclusivity, and reduce discrimination.

In addition, gender-neutral bathrooms with urinals cater to everyone’s needs, including those of once a male or students who prefer or require urinals. Studies have shown that inclusive bathroom policies lead to a significant decrease in bullying incidents and provide a sense of safety and acceptance among students.

It's imperative that the Lewisville School District takes swift action to implement these changes. By doing so, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive environment for all students, ensuring that they feel safe and respected at school, regardless of their gender identity.

So Join me in urging the Lewisville School District to make all bathrooms gender-neutral with urinals. Let’s stand together to support our transgender students and promote a culture of acceptance and kindness. Please sign this petition to make a real change.
