Implement Funding for Off The Track Standardbred Horses in South Australia

The issue

My story deeply roots in my personal connection with OTT (Off The Track) Standardbred horses, as I proudly own two impressive, versatile creatures of this breed. Time and again, I have seen the massive and underappreciated efforts of the selfless volunteers who operate re-homing facilities for these exemplary horses after their racing careers. The lack of financial and structural support these establishments receive is shocking, forcing them to rely entirely on their own resources without any external funding. The disheartening condition in which some of these horses arrive, often a result of neglect, necessitates immediate attention and serious reforms.

A crucial aspect of this concern is the complete absence of governing bodies, breeders, owners, or trainers extending financial assistance for these horses' life after racing. This lack of involvement and commitment contributes to these magnificent creatures being disadvantaged and mistreated. Also, the issue of accountability from studs for the overproduction of horses needs addressing, pushing the welfare system to its limits and increasing the number of horses requiring post-race care.

Real change can occur if regulations compel breeders, owners, trainers, and studs to contribute funding and ensure the horses' welfare is maintained after their racing career ends. The rehoming process and health quality of OTT Standardbred horses demand urgent intervention.

Join us in seeking major reforms in the racing industry to ensure the financial responsibility and welfare of OTT Standardbred horses. It's time to challenge the system, assign responsibilities, and initiate a purposeful transformation to safeguard these magnificent animals' lives post-racing. Please sign and share this petition to call on our elected officials to act now.
