The Issue

We are devastated to share our personal experience of losing our beloved mother due to neglect and inaction at a rehabilitation center. These facilities are meant to help people reclaim their health and return home, but our mother was denied this opportunity. A single mother and a beautiful soul, her loss has profoundly impacted our family.

This tragic event underlines the urgent need for change. We are calling for federal regulations mandating a maximum resident-to-staff ratio of 1:5 or a maximum of 1:10 in all short and long-term care facilities. This change would ensure the provision of adequate care and attention for each resident.

Furthermore, we call for guidelines requiring all caregivers to complete a six-hour course in dementia. According to the Alzheimer's Association, dementia is prevalent in 80% of nursing home residents. This training is critical to understanding and caring for these residents adequately. Similarly, an obligation to maintain public access to past and current complaints about facilities via an online platform – updated weekly – must be established. This transparency will aid future residents and their families in making informed decisions.

Finally, we insist on mandating quarterly license checks and inspections by states; a practice which will ensure ongoing adherence to standards. The elderly population, according to the Census Bureau, is set to outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history by 2034, underlining the future impact of these facilities.

Quality of life in these years should be a priority, not a gamble. Sign this petition and demand the implementation of these regulations for our loved ones in short and long-term care facilities.
