Implement Fair Auto Insurance Pricing Regulations

Implement Fair Auto Insurance Pricing Regulations
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are calling for urgent reform to Ontario's auto insurance system, which places an unfair burden on accident survivors by imposing unaffordable premium hikes that often exceed the value of the car itself. For many, this financial burden is unmanageable, forcing people into difficult situations just to stay insured.
As immigrants we are working hard to build our life here, After experiencing an accident myself, I was shocked to find that my annual insurance premium quote was higher than the overall price of my car. I am now essentially paying for my car all over again each year, just to stay insured. This financial strain has forced me to work double just to cover my insurance costs, leaving little room for other essential expenses. On top of this, some brokers have even advised me to relocate to a different area—far from where I work or study—just to access a lower premium. This advice is not only impractical but also unfair to those with jobs, family, or school commitments that tie them to their community.
Accidents are unintentional; no one causes them on purpose. Yet the current insurance system treats accident survivors as if they do, punishing them with skyrocketing rates and making it nearly impossible to recover financially. One accident should not lead to years of financial hardship or force someone to work twice as hard just to afford insurance.
We demand the following changes
1. A cap on premium increases after an accident, so that rates remain affordable and do not exceed the value of the vehicle. Drivers should not have to pay for their car’s value in insurance costs year after year.
2. Discounts and protections for accident survivors, especially those with a previously clean driving record, allowing them to recover without the long-term financial burden of a single unintentional incident.
3. Transparent calculations of how accident history and location impact premiums, ensuring fairness in pricing and allowing drivers to understand their rates.
4.Affordable insurance options for those advised to relocate due to high premiums. No one should have to uproot their life and move far from work, school, or family just to access reasonable insurance.
5. Legislative action to prevent insurers from using accidents as an excuse to impose unjustified rate hikes, ensuring fair treatment of accident survivors.
We urge lawmakers, insurance companies, and industry leaders to create an insurance system that treats accident survivors with compassion and fairness. People should not be financially punished for one unintentional accident, nor should they have to work double or relocate just to afford insurance.
Sign this petition to advocate for a fairer, more accessible auto insurance system that acknowledges the unintentional nature of accidents, respects drivers’ financial realities, and ensures premiums remain within reach
