The Issue

How can one F9 dictate my future? How can a single exam, written under strict time constraints, determine where I go next year and what I do with my life? This is the reality facing thousands of hardworking students in Ghana. Students who studied day and night, who faced health challenges, or who gave everything they had to prepare for this exam are being told they must wait a whole year before they can continue their education. That! is! not! fair!

Personally, as someone who wrote WASSCE this year, I can testify that it was extremely difficult — mentally, physically, and emotionally. Those who say it was easy have forgotten how demanding examination season really is. Beyond the exams, we faced other seemingly intractable challenges: in a free SHS system, many of us neither a balanced diet or ideal conditions to learn, yet we warred gallantly for our education. I know friends who put everything into studying and still failed. Friends who are some of the smartest people I know will now be denied the chance to attend university. Some of these students are even so overwhelmed that they have contemplated ending their lives because of these results.

We have alternatives like NOV/DEC, but even these options delay students from fully achieving their dreams. Why must students wait another year, struggling with the same subjects and questions they may not have been properly trained to answer? What happens to their confidence and belief in their own abilities? Must one score define us and dictate the rest of our lives? One exam does not reflect a student’s intelligence, dedication, or potential. Many capable young Ghanaians are being pushed aside because of circumstances beyond their control. They deserve a future — a chance to pursue university this January and contribute to Ghana’s growth.

The power of the state is to protect its people and give them the best opportunities. When we leave students behind, questioning their self-worth and purpose, we are failing them — and failing Ghana. We are calling on the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and universities to provide fair alternatives such as remarking, entrance exams, or temporary bridging programmes to ensure that no student is denied their opportunity because of one exam outcome. Better yet, the free SHS system should be revamped to not only fully and adequately prepare us for examinations but the competitive world of work ahead of us. The time to act is now — Ghana’s youth, talent, and future cannot wait.

Sign this petition to demand fair pathways for 2025 WASSCE students, and help ensure that every capable Ghanaian has the chance to achieve their dreams.
