Implement Equitable Child Maintenance Legislation for All Parents

The Issue

Speaking from personal experience, the current child maintenance system is unbalanced and unfair. I have vigorously fought to spend time with my children, but during this time my ex-wife has exploited child maintenance as a means to limit my access to them. Painfully enough, the less I'm able to see them, the more I am obligated to pay.

This isn't simply my story, but it's a narrative too common amongst parents separated or divorced. It's a system that inadvertently incentivizes limiting access to children for financial gain. In the UK, for instance, around 50% of separated parents don't receive the full child maintenance they are due according to Gingerbread, a charity supporting single parents.

We need reform which guarantees fairness for both parents when it comes to child maintenance, ensuring that financial responsibility does not overshadow the fundamental right to parent-child interactions. Our children deserve both financial support and love from both parents, equally without any discrepancies.

I believe that as a law when parents split the responsibility should lie with each parent 50/50 unless otherwise agreed by both parties or ordered by a court. No parent should need to fight a legal system for their god given right to be a parent.

CMS should also take into account more than just the stay over of the children. There is so much more to paying for children than simply giving them a bed. Parents pay for school uniforms, food, clothes, sporting and other extra curricula activities, yet none of these are accepted as a cost of raising a child. The whole system needs bringing into the modern world.

As parents let’s come together and make things better, this will benefit the children the CMS was supposed to protect.

By signing this petition, you will be pushing for a fairer child maintenance system, ensuring both parents are given the right to fulfill their duties and responsibilities equally and without prejudice. It's time to call for balance. It's time to enhance the well-being of our children. Please sign and share this petition today.
