The Issue

I'm from Erbil, the bustling capital of the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. As an inhabitant of this vibrant city, I have witnessed the severe impacts of electricity shortages in our daily lives. It's disheartening to see families, businesses, and hospitals struggling with irregular power supply that affects both health and economic growth.

The electricity crisis has become a persistent challenge for us in Erbil and throughout the wider Kurdistan region. Despite being rich in energy resources, the Kurdistan Region has faced continuous power outages that hinder our ability to thrive and develop. According to a 2020 report from the World Bank, approximately 50% of electricity demand in Iraq goes unmet, reflecting on everyday hardships we have to endure due to this deficiency.

Without a reliable power supply, local businesses are unable to operate efficiently, students find it difficult to study after sunset, and essential services, like hospitals, can't function optimally. This not only impacts our quality of life but also stifles economic opportunities, leaving many unemployed and unable to provide for their families.

We urgently need the government to prioritize resolving this issue by investing in infrastructure upgrades, exploring renewable energy sources, and adopting policies that ensure efficient power distribution. Implementing these changes could transform our lives significantly by providing a consistent power supply that meets our needs.

By signing this petition, you can stand with us in demanding necessary reforms in electricity generation and distribution in Kurdistan. Together, we can urge our leaders to take immediate and effective action for a brighter future. Please sign and support our cause to bring light and progress to Erbil and Kurdistan.
