Ever taken a drive through Scarborough? If yes, then you are all too familiar with the jarring experience of hitting a pothole unexpectedly, the scrunch of a cracked road under your tires, and the uneasy feeling of steering your way around the minefield of road damage. I find myself facing this challenge daily, damaging my car tires and putting the safety of my journeys at risk, and I believe it's a common struggle for many others. Studies show that poorly maintained roads lead to over one-third of fatal crashes in the U.S. alone. We believe the situation is no different in Scarborough. 

We need to raise our voices and call for a change. We require enhanced governmental focus and investments in better, more efficient and lasting solutions for our roads - fixing the potholes that wreck our commutes is only part of the solution. Permanent preventative strategies are necessary to our road infrastructure, to ultimately eliminate the danger of these hazardous potholes. 

Some innovative solutions that the city should take into consideration are: 

• Building roads with a new material instead of asphalt to prevent future potholes. 
• Using AI technology (e.g. a robot) to detect cracks/damages on roads and send them to the city, allowing for faster pothole detections. 
• Installing heating devices under roads 
• Building self-healing pavements

We can't do this alone.
