Sex education is an essential component of a young person's development, providing them with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their health and relationships. Unfortunately, many students in the Philippines are not receiving adequate information on these critical topics, which can lead to harmful consequences such as unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unhealthy relationships.

In the Philippines, where issues such as teenage pregnancy and STIs are prevalent, it is imperative for the Department of Education (DepEd) to take bold steps towards equipping young individuals with the right information. According to a 2019 report by the Philippine Statistics Authority, the country has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates among ASEAN member states, with about 10% of girls aged 15-19 having begun childbearing. Additionally, data from the Department of Health highlights a concerning rise in STI cases among the youth.

Implementing comprehensive sex education from high school through college can address these issues by educating students on a wide range of topics, including human sexuality, reproductive health, consent, and healthy relationships. By doing so, students can develop a better understanding of their bodies, recognize the importance of mutual respect in relationships, and learn how to make healthier life choices.

Comprehensive sex education not only aims to inform but also to empower students to take charge of their health and well-being. It encourages critical thinking, cultural sensitivity, and personal responsibility, ultimately leading to safer and more responsible communities.

We urge the DepEd to mandate comprehensive sex education across all high schools and colleges in the country, ensuring that the curriculum is age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and scientifically accurate. Through consultations with education experts, parents, and community leaders, the curriculum can be continuously improved to meet the diverse needs of Filipino students.
