Implement Comprehensive ADA Compliance & Maintenance at Montclair State University

Implement Comprehensive ADA Compliance & Maintenance at Montclair State University
The Issue
I am a Public Health Student of Montclair State University, have spent my last 3 years here witnessing firsthand the struggles faced by disabled and injured students and faculty. Their stories of frustration and worry due to inadequate accessibility measures on campus have deeply touched us. It is time for a change.
Currently, not all doorways around our university are equipped with noticed that assistance isn't always available when needed - especially during after-hours. This leaves many individuals in vulnerable situations where they cannot access certain areas or buildings on campus without help.
Lastly, there is a significant lack of ramping around campus which further limits mobility for those using wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
The U.S Census Bureau reports that nearly one in five people have a disability in the U.S., which means it's likely that hundreds if not thousands within our university community are affected by these issues every day.
We call upon Montclair State University administration to take immediate action to address these concerns. Our ask is to enhance accessibility throughout Montclair State University by securing funding for the maintenance or replacement of ADA push buttons and doors, monthly checks on ADA push buttons and doors functionality, a 24/7 phone number/assistance for those who are disabled and or injured and trying to get around campus and into the buildings, easy access to transportation around campus when the shuttle is not available or down. This entails ensuring clear signage both outside and inside buildings to indicate the locations of ramps, elevators, and accessible doorways.
Please sign this petition if you believe in equal access for all at Montclair State University!
