My 9 year old son received a phone for Christmas from his mum. His behaviour and manners got worse afterwards and with time. I then noticed he has been using age restricted apps, such as Snapchat who can expose him to subtle dangers. This is not just an isolated incident. As per an estimate by eMarketer, approximately 73% of children ages 9 through 11 in the U.S. use social media and smartphones today (eMarketer, 2020). This exposure potentially subjects them to inappropriate content and several kinds of cyber threats, including online bullying, identity theft, and exposure to explicit content. These risks can have serious lifelong consequences, affecting their mental health and overall well-being. It's time we hold irresponsible parents accountable and ensure that use of social media on phones and tablets is considered a matter of children protection and safety, and as such it is enforceable by social services.
