Implement Background Checks for Online Dating Users

Implement Background Checks for Online Dating Users
The Issue
Domestic violence & dating sites. I’m going to attempt & campaign for this petition to be made law before engaging with strangers on online dating. If only this was active last year when my sister was murdered by her then boyfriend of 8 months, Ruth would have been still with us if she had the chance of this protection. Her perpetrator had multiple domestic violence convictions in the past. We need to try & stamp out DV. If you wish to sign this petition I would be so grateful. Thank you 💜
Every year, thousands of individuals fall victim to domestic violence, often at the hands of someone they met online. Dating sites can be a wonderful place to meet new people, but they can also bring individuals into contact with those who may wish them harm. The lack of mandatory background checks on these platforms is a glaring oversight that puts countless users at risk.
In 2020 alone, nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men experienced severe intimate partner physical violence (source: National Coalition Against Domestic Violence). Many of these incidents could potentially be prevented if online dating platforms took proactive measures to ensure the safety of their users.
Making background checks mandatory for everyone who wishes to use online dating sites is a necessary step towards ensuring a safer environment for all users. Knowing the history of potential matches would not only protect users but also act as a deterrent to those with violent pasts.
While freedom and privacy are vital rights, the safety and lives of individuals should not be compromised. Other industries require background checks to keep people safe; online dating should be no different.
Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to make it a requirement for online dating sites to conduct background checks on all users, helping to prevent potential cases of domestic violence and ultimately save lives. Together, we can create a safer space for online daters and protect more individuals from harm. Please sign and share this petition. Thank you. 💜💜💜
