The Issue

As a Parent Advocate for 30 years for Special Needs kids, I've witnessed firsthand the pain and suffering endured by children who have been victims of bullying. This is more than a call for change; it's a cry for help to the very institutions we entrust our children's future with. In Gaston County Schools, bullying has sadly become an increasing concern. Our children deserve to receive an education in a safe, secure and accepting environment, free from fear and intimidation.

Adding surveillance cameras to every classroom can provide an additional layer of security, discouraging any unacceptable behaviour. This measure, though not infringing on the academic freedom, will potentially regulate behaviours, as double checked by the National Institute of Justice, U.S, which in a study, found that "camera systems had a positive effect on preventing crime".

However, prevention doesn't begin and end with surveillance. Schools need to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against bullying and work alongside parents, and students, to build a socially healthy environment where respect and empathy is cultivated and practiced.

We urge Gaston County Schools to rise to the occasion and take assertive action against bullying and boost security measures. Sign this petition to join us in demanding a safer and more conducive learning environment for all Gaston County School students.
