Implement an Insurance Price Cap for New Drivers
Implement an Insurance Price Cap for New Drivers
The Issue
As Young Person aged 19, and having recently passed my Driving Test, I now have to challenge of trying to find reasonable Car Insurance, so I can get out on the road . . .
Unfortunately, “reasonable” & “affordable”, does not seem to be a word Insurance Providers understand the meaning of, however they definitely seem the understand the meaning of “Unreasonable”, “Unbelievable”, “Out of the Question”, “Impossible”, “Not Going to Happen”, “Unaffordable”, “Stupid”.
I have spent hours, days trying to find an affordable quote on my car. But at £6000 upwards a year, it just is not going to happen. Wether you can or can’t afford that, no one in they’re sane mind is going to pay that!
For reference I am a 19 year old Man, my car is a Mini, it only has a small engine, worth currently around £3500, (even though the cheeky insurance companies, say it’s worth £900!). I am getting quoted £500 a month (£6000 a year), to insure my car, and that’s the cheapest quote! That’s basically saying I am going to right my car off 6 times a year + cause £600 worth of damage!
People say, “get an even older lower spec car, it will be cheaper to insure” . . . But I don’t even think that works now.
One of my best friends, she is a 18 year Girl. She has a 2004, as basic as can be Ford KA, worth about £800 at the moment. She is “currently paying” £370 a month £4440 a year! That’s basically saying she’s going to right the car off 5 times a year + cause £440 worth of damage!
It is estimated that there are around 40,000,000 people who can drive in the UK, with an average car value of £25,000. It is also estimated that there around 135,000 casualties from Road Traffic Accidents each year.
Let’s say those 40,000,000 drivers all paid £200 a month car insurance, that would make the Car Insurance Industry worth £8,000,000,000 (£8 Billion) a year.
So, for arguments sake let’s say those 135,000 casualties equates to 135,000 accidents, multiplied by the average car value £25,000 gives you £3,375,000,000, which would meaning there is £4,625,000,000 left for administrative & staffing costs.
So, working on these rough calculations, why do we need these ludicrous Car Insurance Quotes, that Young People or Experienced Drivers can’t afford??
Which is why I want the Government to support Young People and bring in legislation, to put a permanent price cap of a maximum of £200 a month on Car Insurance for Young People, preferably even cheaper, or get progressively cheaper in time!
There is no need for these ludicrous quotes! Where do insurance companies, think Young people would get the money from? Not all young people are in full time employment and even still don’t have enough money for insurance! Some young people don’t even make £50 a week from a little Saturday Job.
SUPPORT YOUNG PEOPLE TO GET DRIVING
The cost of Driving Lessons . . . well that’s another campaign in its self?
