Implement American Sign Language Class at Morehead State University

Implement American Sign Language Class at Morehead State University
The Issue
As a member of the hard of hearing community, I have experienced firsthand the challenges and barriers that individuals like myself face in our daily lives. Communication is an essential part of human interaction, yet for those who are Ddeaf/HOH, it can often be a struggle to effectively communicate with others who do not understand or use American Sign Language (ASL).
I am writing this petition to urge Morehead State University to implement an American Sign Language class as part of its curriculum. By offering ASL classes on campus, we can create a more inclusive and accessible environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
Here are some key reasons why implementing an ASL class at Morehead State University is crucial:
1. Empowering the Ddeaf/HOH Community: Providing access to ASL education would empower members of the Ddeaf/HOH community by giving them the tools they need to communicate effectively with their peers and participate fully in campus life.
2. Enhanced Communication Skills: Learning ASL not only benefits individuals who are Ddeaf/HOH but also provides valuable communication skills for everyone. By understanding and using sign language, students will be better equipped to interact with diverse populations throughout their personal and professional lives.
3. Increased Accessibility: Having an ASL class available on campus would promote inclusivity by breaking down communication barriers between individuals who are Ddeaf/HOH and those who are not. This would foster a more inclusive learning environment where everyone feels valued and understood.
4. Career Opportunities: Proficiency in ASL opens up numerous career opportunities in fields such as education, healthcare, social work, interpreting services, government agencies, entertainment industries (such as TV/film production), among others. Offering an ASL class would equip students with valuable skills that can enhance their employability after graduation.
5. Supporting Diversity and Inclusion: By offering an ASL class, Morehead State University would demonstrate its commitment to diversity and inclusion. It would send a powerful message that the university values all students, regardless of their hearing abilities, and is dedicated to providing equal opportunities for everyone.
I kindly request the support of the Morehead community in signing this petition to urge Morehead State University to implement an American Sign Language class. Together, we can make a positive change on campus by fostering inclusivity and empowering individuals who are Ddeaf/HOH.
Thank you for your support in creating a more accessible and inclusive environment at Morehead State University!
