My 12-year-old daughter was struck by a moving vehicle while crossing the intersection of Francistown Road and Shimmering Lane in Henrico County, VA. Despite following all safety measures - pressing the crosswalk lights and waiting for vehicles to stop - she became a victim of this dangerous intersection. This incident is not isolated; vehicles frequently fail to slow down or stop when crosswalk lights are flashing, posing significant risks to pedestrians.

The current traffic control measures at this intersection are inadequate for ensuring pedestrian safety. Moreover, drivers attempting left turns face high collision risks due to speeding vehicles. The introduction of a Stop Light would greatly mitigate these dangers by regulating traffic flow more effectively.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), intersections with poor visibility or inadequate traffic control devices contribute significantly to vehicular accidents involving pedestrians. In 2019 alone, there were 6,205 pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes nationwide.

We urge Henrico County officials to prioritize public safety by implementing a Stop Light at this critical intersection. By doing so, we can prevent future tragedies like what happened to my daughter from occurring again.
