Implement a Sliding Pay Scale at Veterinary Clinics for Accessible Pet Care

Implement a Sliding Pay Scale at Veterinary Clinics for Accessible Pet Care
The Issue
On a regular day, Thomas, a happy-go-lucky cat who found me in my backyard and we instantly bonded, stopped being his joyful self. He refused to eat and struggled to get up, signs that filled my heart with dread. I swiftly rushed him to the local animal hospital. There, we discovered a life-threatening blockage in his urethra. The cost to save his life? $5600. A cost so astronomical, crippling genuine pet owners like myself from providing the necessary care led to a heart-wrenching decision: having Thomas euthanized.
However, this is not an isolated incident. Many pet owners across the country face similar situations. A 2018 study by the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that approximately 27% of US households experienced barriers to veterinary services in the past two years because of financial restrictions. This paints a disturbing picture, highlighting the desperate need for a more flexible pay model that could prevent avoidable pet losses due to economic distress.
We propose a sliding pay scale system, based on income, to make pet healthcare affordable for everyone. This would give all pet owners the ability to provide their loved companions the care they need during crucial times, without the burden of exorbitant costs. Our beloved pets shouldn't have to pay the price for a system that needs change.
Your signature will act as a voice for all pet owners who have faced or might face a situation like ours. It's time we say no to prohibitive costs and advocate for a fairer system at veterinary clinics. Our pets' lives depend on it. Please, sign this petition.
