The Issue

I have always cherished the unique beauty of Utah's wilderness—its majestic mountains, scenic forests, animals, and breathtaking landscapes. However, each year, our beloved natural areas are threatened by wildfires sparked by human hands, especially due to unattended campfires. It's heart-wrenching to see the damage that could have been prevented in the first place.

One of the significant contributors to these fires is campers neglecting to properly extinguish their fires. A simple act of negligence can lead to devastating consequences. Wildfires not only destroy a lot of our forests, but also put lives at risk, cause significant property damage, and severely impact our precious wildlife populations—many of which are already vulnerable.

In 2022, human-caused wildfires accounted for nearly half of the total wildfires in Utah, with state records attributing roughly 49% of the year's 963 fires to human activity. This statistic serves as a crucial reminder of our impact on public lands. By practicing better outdoor safety, we can significantly reduce these preventable disasters.

An effective solution would be to establish a law in Utah that mandates all campers to thoroughly extinguish their campfires, ensuring that every ember is put out before leaving their campsite. This is not just a recommendation but a necessary step to protect our lands and communities. Such a law would require clear guidelines, including checking the fire site thoroughly for any remaining heat and ensuring all glowing embers are cooled down completely.

Moreover, the introduction of this law should be complemented with a  educational campaign to raise awareness about the importance of fire safety in natural areas. By having campsite hosts and owners make sure they tell every person about the law before letting them go into their set up, we can foster a culture of respect towards our environment and wildlife.

The time to act is now. We cannot afford to wait for another fire season to wreak havoc before taking decisive action. Let's protect our beautiful state and its inhabitants by making fire safety a priority. Please sign this petition to urge Utah lawmakers to implement this important law and safeguard our cherished outdoors for future generations.

Together, we can make a difference and ensure that Utah remains a place of natural wonder and safety.
