The Issue

To: Chief Minister Sindh, Minister for Education Sindh, and Secretary School Education & Literacy Department

I am deeply concerned about the current educational and working system in Sindh where both government and private schools adhere to a six-day working week. This not only places undue stress on students but also adversely affects the health and well-being of our dedicated teachers and educational staff.

The well-being of students is closely tied to their ability to rest, rejuvenate, and participate in extracurricular activities, which are crucial for holistic development. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics and similar organizations worldwide highlights the importance of sufficient rest and downtime for children and adolescents. A five-day school week would afford students the necessary weekend to recharge and engage in other personal development activities, further enhancing their academic performance and emotional well-being.

Furthermore, teachers and staff, who work tirelessly to educate and guide the next generation, would benefit considerably from an additional day of rest. This change would enable them to focus better on preparing lessons, applying innovative teaching methods, and supporting their students' diverse needs. By having more time to rest and recharge, teachers can maintain their enthusiasm and commitment to education, thus directly impacting student outcomes.

Successful educational systems in various parts of the world, such as Finland and several provinces in Canada, already employ a five-day working week. These systems consistently rank higher in educational achievement and student well-being, suggesting Sindh could benefit from a similar approach.

Moreover, a five-day school week would also potentially reduce transportation costs and energy consumption within schools, contributing to a more sustainable environment. It provides the school administration an opportunity to reevaluate resource allocation, ultimately leading to cost savings which can be channelled towards improving school infrastructure and resources.

I urge the Minister of Education, Syed Sardar Ali Shah , CM Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, and all educational stakeholders in Sindh to consider this change seriously. The move to a five-day school week is not solely about lessening educational rigor; it's about reshaping the educational model to prioritize quality of education and the holistic health of everyone involved.
