Our scenic landscapes, city streets, and beloved green spaces are increasingly becoming littered with cans, glass, and plastic bottles. This not only damages the look and feel of our communities, but also poses a serious threat to our environment and local wildlife. The reality of this issue is deeply personal to me, and it's time we address it head-on.

Countries like Ireland have successfully adopted a deposit return system for these materials greatly reducing littering and promoting recycling. Such a system, if implemented in the UK, could result in a reduction in the number of bottles and cans not properly recycled, according to the consumers association Which?

This is no small feat. The time for action is now, well before 2027, as waiting until then would be too late to mitigate the destructive impacts of litter and low recycling rates.

We ask that the UK Government swiftly establish a deposit return system for cans, glass, and plastic bottles. By doing so, we can protect our ecosystems, promote responsible waste management, and preserve the beauty of our communities for future generations.
