The Issue

As someone deeply passionate about political affairs, I find myself increasingly exasperated due to the presence of lifelong politicians in our government. Their authority seems to prevail indefinitely, often leading to decisions that primarily benefit their own interests over those of the people they serve. I believe it is time to enact change. This petition seeks to establish a maximum term limit of 12 years for all elected federal positions that currently do not have term limits. This change would foster diversity and inclusion of fresh perspectives in our political system.

Maintaining the same individuals in power for extended periods can lead to stagnation, hinder constructive development, and facilitate an environment that enables corruption. According to data from the Congressional Research Service, the average tenure for members of the House has been steadily rising and currently stands at approximately 9.1 years, with the average Senate tenure being even longer at roughly 10.1 years. This suggests a trend towards lifelong political careers that defy the principle of citizen representation.

In contrast, the US presidency is restricted to a maximum of two four-year terms, evidencing an acceptance of term limits at some level of federal government. It is thus not outlandish to consider applying such limits more universally. A rotation in office is a fundamental aspect of a healthy democracy, ensuring that power does not stagnate in the hands of a few.

Let us direct our efforts to enact this change, fostering a healthier and more dynamic political atmosphere that truly stands up for the principles of representation and public service. Sign this petition to support the implementation of a 12-year term limit for all elected federal officials without current term limits. Let us reclaim our political system and make it truly representative of the people.
