Immediate Need for Sacramento Services Shuttle

The Issue

CLAP, Community Lead Advocacy Program, was created due to the lack of access to viable resources for our unhoused and low to no income Sacramento communities. Sacramento is an amazing place to live but without a car or adequate transportation those in underserved areas regularly go without basic resources and  community connections. For some community members who have to navigate across town the fares for an all day pass or even a single fare ticket are not affordable. Public transportation is continuously voiced by community members as not being accessible for all. The COVID 19 pandemic has never made it more clear that equitable change has to happen.

CLAP along with the Sacramento Community are proposing an immediate Social Services Shuttle that our unhoused and low to no income neighbors can ride free. The Social Services Shuttle would be a bus implemented by the Sacramento Regional Transit District. The Shuttle would navigate through key areas of the South Sacramento zip codes, to public assistance and services in the area, as well as to downtown where Sacramento has resources centralized. There will be an additional bus that navigates through North Highlands and Del Paso Heights stopping at key locations then to downtown for those who need basics to access a regular meal, public benefits, and social support for empowerment.

Fares for Sacramento Regional Transit District only make up a small portion of revenues for Regional transit and free fares would help eliminate tickets and fines that cruelly penalize those who are usually the lowest of income. A free Social Services Shuttle also promotes safety and climate justice for Sacramento. Sacramento Regional Transit has provided free fares to our youth and ridership has gone up over 100% so free fares work.

We don't want to return pre-pandemic times where our communities in need have no connection to support. We need your voice to tell Sacramento Regional Transit District that there must be a Social Services Shuttle for our Sacramento community.
