Immediate Addressing of Violence Against Migrants in Ireland
The Issue
To: Micheál Martin
Subject: Increasing racial violence against migrants in Ireland
We, the undersigned residents of Ireland, are writing this letter to urgently ask that you address the increasing level of racially-motivated violence against migrants in Ireland, especially the violent acts that should be labeled under hate crime.
We are appalled at the lack of policing and the lack of presence of Gardaí at multiple scenes of incidents in Dublin City and outlying towns as far as Drogheda, (please add). The Garda force have over and over again failed to prevent a violent act from happening, and to add insult to injury, have made it almost impossible for people to file a rightful complaint when an act of violence has occurred. Many of these acts have needed emergency medical attention and as we are all aware, some have died. Many of us have stayed silent hoping that the problem will be addressed but we can no longer do so. The incidents have only increased in frequency and we see no action on the part of the government and the policing force to ensure that Ireland is a safer place. In fact, many of us are afraid to go out to do a simple act such as buying groceries and watching a film.
It is becoming clear that the people who run Ireland have not made it a priority to make sure that this country is safe for all, including the migrants who make this country a vibrant dynamic place, and pay taxes.
What will it take for Ireland to finally address this problem? How many epithets and slurs must people endure before you admit that this is a society-wide issue? How many more people have to be blinded, and maimed and murdered before you realise that you could have done something, but did not?
Your inaction is unacceptable. And we are angry.
We ask for your immediate response.
Yours sincerely,
