Illuminate Niagara Falls Green on April 20th Annually

The Issue

Niagara Falls, Ontario has long served as a global symbol of unity, celebration, and cultural recognition. Each year, the Niagara Falls Illumination Board honours meaningful causes and communities from around the world through colour, light, and awareness. This petition asks the Board to extend that same spirit of inclusivity by lighting Niagara Falls green on April 20th (4/20) beginning in 2026. For many Canadians and people all around the world, cannabis has played an important role in personal wellness, harm reduction, and community support.

Beyond personal stories, cannabis has become part of Canada’s broader cultural landscape since legalization. It contributes to tourism, hospitality, community events, and public education, much like other industries that represent significant cultural and social value.

Cannabis plays a meaningful role in the lives of millions of Canadians. Since legalization:

• Over 22 million Canadians live in provinces with legal access
• More than 70% of Canadians support legalization
• Nearly 27% of adults use cannabis for medical, wellness, or harm-reduction reasons
• Cannabis tourism and hospitality contribute hundreds of millions annually to local economies, including Ontario’s tourism regions
• Cannabis industry generated over $75 billion to Canada’s GDP since legalization.
• Cannabis hospitality is growing across Canada and will contribute to tourism growth

April 20th has grown into a globally recognized date that symbolizes community, reflection, and cultural expression for millions of people. As Niagara Falls already lights up in green for celebrations such as Saint Patrick’s Day, extending the same gesture to 4/20 would acknowledge the millions of Canadians who view cannabis as part of their culture, wellness journey, or heritage. This request is not a commercial promotion, but a recognition of inclusivity, diversity, and the lived experiences of many residents and visitors.

Lighting the Falls green on April 20th would also mark the unofficial opening of Niagara’s spring tourism season that welcomes guests with responsible, respectful, and celebration that reflects Canada’s modern cultural identity and inclusion.

We respectfully urge the Niagara Falls Illumination Board to honour this growing community by illuminating the Falls in green on April 20th, 2026, and annually thereafter. Together, we can celebrate progress, understanding, and unity at one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders.

Please add your name in support of this request for inclusion, recognition, and cultural equality.

Thank you to everyone that supports tourism, equality, inclusion, and the Canadian cannabis industry.
