The Idaho Cruelty to Animal Statutes (Title 25, Chapter 35) states that anyone charged with Animal Cruelty within the state of Idaho will be found guilty of a misdemeanor. They will spend not more than 6 months in jail or by fine of $100 to $5,000, or both. Idaho is one of only 3 states that have not made Animal Abuse a Felony charge. All 47 other states treat Animal Cruelty as it should be treated, as a SERIOUS felony offense. It is not suggested that we change our laws because 47 other states have, but because we can be the leader of the only 3 states without Felony punishment to animal abusers. It was once said that, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." -Mahatma Gandhi. This goes for the state of Idaho, we are a state that should hold our morals higher than what we suggest with its Animal Cruelty Laws. Animal abuse is directly related to violent crimes, there are plenty of studies that have shown how animal abuse is the first stepping stone to domestic violence. By giving convicted animal abusers felony punishments, we are directly affecting the percentage of interpersonal violence in the state of Idaho. I am not the first, and I will not be the last to petition for Felony punishment to Animal Abusers.
