When Clare Druce founded the campaign group, Chickens’ Lib, with her mother in the 1970s, almost nobody was talking about the plight of hens in cages.
But in the decades that followed, Clare blazed a trail, fighting against the intense cruelty that chickens experience on factory farms in the UK.
Clare inspires me because, at a time when few people knew or cared about the plight of farmed animals, she fearlessly led the way.

Now, in 2025, thanks to the campaigning of Clare and caring people like you, the use of cruel cages is rapidly declining. 4 in 5 hens are now free from cages in the UK - a huge increase on just a decade ago.
But one supermarket stands in the way of progress.

Farmfoods bosses have betrayed their promise and now say they will not be going cage-free. That puts over 100,000 hens at risk of lives trapped in dark, cramped cages. But there’s still time to stop this. We’ve launched a new petition demanding that Farmfoods bosses reinstate their commitment to stop caging hens immediately.
Just a couple of months ago, you forced Iceland bosses into a u-turn after they tried to abandon their cage-free promise. We can win again, but for this new campaign to make the change we need for hens, we’re going to need your help.
Once you’ve signed the petition, will you spread the word by sharing it with just one more person via WhatsApp using this handy link?
For the animals,
Katie Ferneyhough, Head of Programs at The Humane League UK
