The grid roads in Milton Keynes are one of our greatest assets, and they are under threat! MK Council is launching a new war on motorists.

Milton Keynes Council is considering:

• Reducing the speed limit to 40mph/50mph
• Installing more traffic lights & pedestrian crossings
• Abandoning the grid roads in new areas
• Congestion Charging
• Workplace parking levies
• Increasing the cost of parking

We need to let MK Council know that this is not ok, and that the grid roads are one of the key assets of MK. They set us apart from every other town in the UK, and need to be safeguarded.

Grid roads offer the following benefits over traditional road systems:

• Provide a network of high speed roads
• Offer a choice of routes to keep traffic flowing
• Keep pedestrians & cyclists safe, separated from traffic
• Keep cars on the move, reducing emissions
• Keep cars away from homes, reducing the impact of air & noise pollution
• Could provide the backbone for a fast & efficient public transport system, as every home is no more than a 10 minute walk from a grid road corridor

As car technology evolves, we are rapidly seeing the decarbonisation of driving - so the council’s argument that they need to mount a war on motorists (and our grid roads) carries less and less weight.

Instead of a war on the motorist, a forward-looking council would be supporting and promoting alternatives to the car. There is huge support for a tram system in MK, and for leading the way with piloting new technology such as autonomous vehicles.
