In Michigan, an adaptive student athlete must petition the MHSAA for special permission to play. Even if granted permission, a wheelchair track racer in Michigan can only advance to statewide competition if they get out of their wheelchairs and run faster than standing runners. Without adaptive categories in Michigan school sports, Michigan’s adaptive student athletes miss out on national and international competition, including the Paralympics, and they also miss out on opportunities to demonstrate the skills that college and employment recruiters seek
