​This is an article that was published in the Dungarvan Observer on 29th September 2017. Olivia was talking about how using the flash glucose meter was making such a huge difference in her life as she goes about her day and night manag​ing her Type 1 Diabetes. What the article however does not mention is that the cost including postage is roughly 126.00 euro per month. not a cost that is sustainable monthly while juggling so many other living expences ( food, fuel, medical expences, travel expences etc ) yet the HSE seem to think it was OK to reimburse the libre on Long Term Illness Scheme / LTI for children & young adults only, then on further inspection another restriction comes to light. only those on MDI / Multiple Daily Injections. so many scenarios come to mind here: Adults with Type 1 trying to earn enough to raise their family (not included) Adults with a child who has type 1 and on an insulin pump (not included) Adults desperately trying to manage their type 1 to avoid complications (not included) Adults with type 1 trying to stay employed but not getting a full nights sleep (not included) Adults Adults Adults ...... yes it is all about the adults, why ? Because ultimately its the adults who have to pay hard earned cash for this either for themselves or their child on an insulin pump or multiple daily injections. Because we spend more time in life as an adult with type 1 than we do as a child with type 1. Because our time as a child with type 1 is birth to 18 / 21 years at most. Because if we live with type 1 to a senior person, we will have spent maybe 40 plus years as an adult with type 1. Because as an adult we have some pretty serious responsibilities like driving, raising children etc. Because as an adult woman with type 1 we carry and unborn child, and that childs life is in our hands while trying to manage the ever fluctuating blood glucose. IS THIS UNBORN CHILDS LIFE NOT OF ANY WORTH ? The decision by the HSE and subsequent announcement by Minister Harris on 19th January is discrimination and let there be no doubt about that. Its discrimination on the basis of age, that is illegal and in breech of our human rights.
