We now have over 15,700 signatures so there will be no doubt about our feelings about the decision the HSE made and the Minister for Health, Simon Harris endorsed on 19th January. we have repeatedly phoned and emailed the ministers office and so far he has not replied with a date to meet with us to receive the petition. we have only received the standard type response on February 15th Dear Ms Lyon I wish to acknowledge receipt of your recent letter requesting the Minister to meet with you to accept the hand-over of your petition. Your letter will be brought to the attention of the Minister at the earliest opportunity. Yours sincerely Paula Smeaton Private Secretary******************************************************** the earliest opportunity ? "how long is a piece of string"? talk about putting this on the never never............................ we did reply the following Hello Paula Thank you for letting me know. Can we expect a date over the next few weeks do you think ? If not, a delegation of us, (people with Type 1 Diabetes) are planning to go to The Dail, hopefully during the month of March to present our petition that has now amassed over 15,700 signatures to our representatives so they can present it to the minister if he is not present to meet with us on the day. It’s important that our Type 1 community are involved in this and for those unable to attend on the day we will document the presentation to post / publish along with our regular Blog activity to inform our community of any Updates we have. In the event of us not receiving a date from Minister Harris over the next couple of weeks We will let you know what date we arrange to present the petition We are hoping Minister Harris will be in attendance on the day of presentation. Yours Sincerely, Davina Lyon Co-Founder of Diabetes T One & A Diabetes Life http://adiabeteslife.com/ Today 21st February we have followed up and phoned the ministers office and emailed him. We will update you here about when we are presenting the petition. Hopefully during the month of March. As stated in our email to the minister, in the absence of a date from Minister Harris to meet with us we do intend to deliver the petition at Leinster House, where we will invite all ministers to meet us an receive the petition, they can then present it to the Minister for health. Let there be no doubt about this, The decision to reimburse children and teens / young adults ( include on the Long Term Illness scheme ) for the Freestyle Libre flash glucose meter, that was announced on the 19th January only for those on Multiple daily injections of insulin is discrimination and in breech of our Human rights. It excludes all adults with Type 1 diabetes and children with type 1 diabetes on insulin pumps. Why should they give it to some and not all of us? Remember Children will be longer an Adult with Type 1 Diabetes, then they are a Child with Type 1 Diabetes. (good point made by Liz Murphy) There are only 2 real options here if we are all equal : Reimburse and make available to all Children, all Young Adults and Older Adults..Equality for ALL people with Type 1 Diabetes, whether they are injecting or pumping. OR GIVE TO NONE ........ All people with Type 1 diabetes are worth the same level of care regardless of age.
