On October 6th 2016 the Commonwealth Sports Summit is taking place in Edmonton, Canada. This will be a meeting of some key figures in the Commonwealth Games Federation who will be discussing ways in which the Games can be advanced though engaging, connecting and inspiring for development and peace. This theme is called 'It's Within Us' and I think should use this to motivate the CGF to put archery on the core programme.
First an update on my progress for lobbying. In the last seven months I have made some progress by sharing my campaign with my friends in politics and sports. I have been congratulated for my achievements from people in high places. Members of the Scottish government are pleased to see that the legacy of Glasgow 2014 have had a tremendous impact on people's lives, especially as I am still carrying the baton on for more than two years. Archery GB's talent development team are happy for me and I have shared my story with them whilst volunteering at the EAC 2016 in Nottingham in May. I met with Patrick Huston after the shoot and he was pleased to hear of my campaign and I told him that I hoped to see him play for Northern Ireland in a future CWG to come. My MP has also given me some helpful tips on lobbying for change.
I know that for some of you sport should be kept out of politics but I am not trying to politicise this campaign by associating it with a political party. I am getting Commonwealth supporting members of the establishment involved who are passionate about sport and believes in the values of the CWG. In my experience as a political activist combining it with my activities as a sports volunteer allows me to bring outstanding achievements to the country and the sport itself. If you want your sport to succeed you need to be proactive and that means using your resources and connections to the best of your advantage. My MP is a staunch royalist and an avid Commonwealth supporter and he has given his blessing to this campaign.
As for the summit next month that can be an advantage for the supporters from Canada. We can press this campaign to the Canadian Commonwealth Games and get them to publicise the petition and get them to share the idea of a core archery programme just in time for the delegates and speakers. If anyone from Canada is here then please pass this onto them. Thank You.
