HCPSS Deferred Maintenance - $550 Million

As of October 2018, HCPSS has accrued $550 million in deferred maintenance. Deferred maintenance applies to projects such as electrical, flooring, paint, roofing, plumbing and so forth that existing schools need for upkeep.
In comparison, the county collected a little under $78 million in school impact fees since 2005. If Howard County's school impact fees kept up with that of Montgomery's, it would be over $500 million over 14 years.
It is no coincidence- the deferred maintenance figure is a monument to the county's failed impact fee policy.
Many in the State Delegation are pushing for transfer tax increases and massive redistricting instead of increasing impact fees. Why do they think facing the wrath of developers is less desirable than the taxpayers'?
