Breast screening using ultrasound for women under 50.

Breast screening using ultrasound for women under 50.

The Issue

Women under 50 have denser tissue in their breast, mammograms are less likely to detect solid masses. This has been proven and accepted in the medical communities. After my breast cancer diagnosis, a mammogram was carried out to investigate the other breast. Both breasts were screened and the four solid masses in the left breast could not be seen in the mammogram. After a masectomy at age 35 I have been invited to a yearly mammogram for the next 50 years. Ultrasound will detect the solid masses in the breast indefinitely, therefore this should be used for younger women who are at high risk or who have a history of breast cancer. Women screened using ultrasound will have a much better success rate of detecting cancer early. This will save lives.
