Revoke HCS Virtual Graduation

The Issue

HCS Superintendent, Dr. Rick Maxey, recently announced the virtual setting of all high school graduations. As difficult as this time has been for everyone, a better decision can be made. I respect all authorities of our district who have consulted to make a decision, but empathy for seniors and realization of measures that are being taken by our President to open the country and our Governor to open the state should far outweigh every fear that has driven this decision. Because it is only April, it is probable that a physical graduation be held in July or August following social distancing guidelines, especially given that Governor McMaster has expressed efforts to open retail stores, etc. Whether it be on a football field or another outdoor setting, seniors deserve the opportunity to be recognized for their years of hard work and accomplishments. The loss of all the memories seniors could have made in these last few months of their high school years is heartbreaking enough. A virtual graduation holds no comparison and will never hold the same weight as a traditional, creative means of honoring 2020 seniors.
