Honour the Silence — Stop Traffic for Remembrance Day in Fergus
The Issue
I’ve been attending the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Fergus Cenotaph for more years than I can count.
My father, a veteran, instilled in our family a deep respect for our country and for all who have served—past and present.
Each year, I’ve noticed the crowd growing, which is wonderful to see. As our community continues to expand, I expect that trend will continue.
However, with that growth has also come increased traffic, and last year I was saddened by the level of noise that surrounded the ceremony. During what should have been two minutes of silence, all that could be heard was the steady stream of vehicles and transport trucks all rumbling past one after another. It was nearly impossible to hear
“The Last Post.”
I completely understand that not everyone can pause their day, and that people have places to be, but I can’t help but wonder could traffic not be diverted for just one hour, or even paused for those two minutes of silence, to allow the community to reflect in peace?
It’s a small adjustment, once a year, that would mean so much to those gathering to remember.
I chose to leave the ceremony early last year and pay my respects at home, where I could reflect in quiet. I truly hope that this year, our community can come together united not just in attendance, but in shared silence and respect.🌺
Every November 11th, we gather at the Fergus Cenotaph to remember and honour the brave men and women who served, sacrificed, and gave their lives for our freedom. Yet, while our community stands in solemn silence, traffic continues to move through the streets surrounding the ceremony. Many neighbouring communities recognize the importance of this occasion by temporarily closing roads and stopping traffic during their Remembrance Day services. Why should Fergus be any different? We are asking the Township of Centre Wellington to temporarily close the roads surrounding the Fergus Cenotaph for the duration of the Remembrance Day ceremony, or at the very least, observe a complete traffic stoppage during the two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. This is a small but meaningful gesture of respect, one that allows our veterans, their families, and our community to reflect without the noise and distraction of passing vehicles. They gave so much for us. Surely, we can give them a few moments of uninterrupted silence. Please sign and share this petition so we can demonstrate community support and present our request to Centre Wellington Council before November 11th.
