Glasgow MSPs across the political spectrum have united to back The Splash’s “The Heart of Yorkhill” campaign.

Almost 700 people have signed our petition in partnership with Yorkhill and Kelvingrove Community Council and councillor Philip Bratt since it was launched last week for a permanent memorial garden on the site of the former Yorkhill Sick Children’s Hospital and Queen Mother’s Maternity Unit.

Glasgow Kelvin MSP Kakub Stewart, pictured above, said: “I am delighted to support ‘The Heart of Yorkhill’ campaign to bring a wonderful memorial garden to the former Yorkhill Children’s Hospital and Queen Mothers Maternity Hospital.

“Whilst these former institutions are no longer there, the memories of local residents and those across Glasgow live on.

“So many in Yorkhill and across Glasgow will have happy and sad memories of the hospitals and having a memorial garden would be a lovely place to visit and remember.’

Tory Glasgow Region MSP Annie Wells, said: “Yorkhill holds a special place in the hearts of so many Glasgow families.

“A memorial garden would be a beautiful and meaningful way to honour the children cared for there, the lives sadly lost, and the generations welcomed into the world at the Queen Mother’s.

“I am proud to back this community-led effort to create a space of reflection, gratitude and remembrance.”

Last week the Splash revealed that NHS bosses declared the site “surplus to requirements”

The NHS prepares to sell off the land under the Property Transactions Handbook

We’ve seen the early development plans:
🏢 Six-storey flats
🏠 Around 25 affordable homes and 25 mixed market for rent with Yorkhill Housing Association expressing an interest
🏥 A possible primary care facility and
🚫 NO student accommodation
📅 Site hitting the market in early 2026

But not one line, not one clause, not one sketch guarantees a memorial.

That’s why Heart of Yorkhill must be the loudest campaign this community has ever raised.

Ward councillors Eva Bollander and Angus Millar, who both represent the Yorkhill area, last week throw their weight behind our Heart of Yorkhill campaign.

Councillor Bollander said: "“It would be very fitting to incorporate a memorial garden, a reflective space, maybe not only for the children that sadly passed away, but also in thanks for the many that has been safely born, and healed at Yorkhill Children’s Hospital, and the Queen Mother’s Maternity Hospital.”

Councillor Millar added: “A memorial garden would be a fitting way to recognise how meaningful Yorkhill Hospital is to so many families, and I am happy to support calls for this to be incorporated into the coming redevelopment of the site.”
