We cracked 100! Let's get to 200 and beyond!

In 1966, Anna Arnold Hedgeman became a founding member of the National Organization for Women and served as its first vice president. In the photo from the first press conference, Hedgeman is third from the left next to Betty Friedan.

At Hedgeman's urging, the new group took on issues of economic and educational discrimination that denied or limited opportunities for women. In 1972, NOW organized a national campaign to pass a law guaranteeing women and girls equal educational opportunities, including higher education admissions and athletic participation. In June, Congress passes the Education Amendments of 1972, which includes Title IX, a guarantee of equal educational opportunities, including sports.
