Honorary Chair for the late Samantha Anders

The Issue

  • Samantha Anders was a bright, talented, beautiful girl who sadly took her life during her freshman year of high school. She would be graduating on June 3rd this year.
  • To honor her life, we requested from the school that an honorary chair be placed at graduation on which students who choose to do so may place a single rose to make a bouquet for her family.
  • The school rejected the idea due to it being “triggering” and “glorifying” suicide. What’s triggering is pretending that the fun, loving girl never existed. What’s triggering is being told we can’t honor her because of how she died.
  • This is unfair to her family, her friends, and everyone who knew her.
  • Although there is a school board policy prohibiting memorials for those who committed suicide, when the idea was mentioned at a school board meeting, the board not only agreed, but were ecstatic when the idea was brought up. Then when the school was asked, it was a firm no.
  • This needs to happen for her friends, her family, and her peers.
