This article is interesting for many reasons but mostly how it emphasizes that the entire property IS a Historical site - the property as a whole - not TWO individual buildings. It is important to note that the Garage is the ONLY building actually built by my family. Also, making it extremely rare. It is the first site, NOT only in Pittsburgh but in the entire USA - where Rolling Rock was first sold. Not Latrobe.
In reality this building is actually more critical than house for historical relevance. As much as I LOVE 1817 Fifth Avenue - the real history - MUST be the combination of the House and Garage. Both are instrumental in the first days and beginning of Rolling Rock Beer.
To be clear - the Garage would be taken down ONLY to allow vehicle access into this new Development. If you review any of the drawings for the project, there are two entry points for vehicles at this present time. Also, the encroachment of the development on 1817 Fifth Avenue is laughable. It’s within feet and sort of corners the house into obscurity. In fact, one of The HRC mentions in this article, that the actual truth of the matter is ONLY the front of the house is looking at being saved. The facade. Nothing more. So at the end of the day, it would be no garage and a small portion of this magnificent house in a very cramped and unappealing position.
And maybe the issue that makes me even more concerned is that this project does not allow for affordable housing for The Hill/Uptown/Soho Community. The average household income in those areas is approximately $25,000 per year. The least expense unit that falls within the magical 2% of affordable housing supposedly being offered - is $1400 - furnished. All units are furnished. So they are DEFINITELY not for a community desperately needing TRUE and economical housing alternatives. If it was, my family and I would convene, on this issue much differently.https://triblive.com/local/developer-wants-to-donate-historic-tito-house-to-uptown-partners-nonprofit/
