In 2026, America will mark its 250th anniversary—a time to celebrate the values, struggles, and triumphs that have defined our nation. As part of this historic occasion, we believe that Ripon, Wisconsin, deserves a prominent place in our national celebration, showcasing its vital role in the fight for freedom, justice, and human dignity.
Why Ripon, Wisconsin?
1. Birthplace of the Republican Party
Ripon, Wisconsin, is widely recognized as the birthplace of the Republican Party. In 1854, a group of abolitionists and reformers gathered in the Little White Schoolhouse to form a new political party dedicated to opposing the expansion of slavery and promoting equality. This meeting laid the foundation for a political movement centered on justice, freedom, and human rights, values that continue to resonate in America today. The year 2026 will mark the 172nd anniversary of this historic gathering, making it a fitting time to commemorate Ripon’s legacy on a national stage.
2. The Story of Joshua Glover
Joshua Glover, an escaped enslaved man, sought refuge in Wisconsin, only to be captured under the Fugitive Slave Act. His dramatic rescue by abolitionists and the resulting public outcry underscored Wisconsin’s commitment to human rights and defiance of unjust laws. Glover’s story became a rallying point for the abolitionist movement and strengthened Wisconsin’s—and Ripon’s—reputation as a defender of freedom.
3. The Freedom Flame: 72 Years of Symbolism
The Freedom Flame symbolizes Ripon’s unwavering dedication to liberty and justice. On March 20th, 1954, then-President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent the spark that lit the Freedom Flame in honor of Ripon’s role in the fight for freedom. Since then, the flame has fought to stay lit, silently standing as a tribute to "We the People" as a reminder of Ripon’s enduring role in America’s journey toward equality. As we approach the 72nd anniversary of the Freedom Flame’s lighting, we honor the spirit of liberty it represents and call for Ripon’s place in our national celebrations.
