Honor Dorothy King's Legacy: Street Renaming, Day Proclamation, Comm. Garden in Gary, IN
The Issue
Few individuals have given back to their community the way Dorothy King did for the city of Gary, Indiana. As a precinct committeewoman for over twenty years, an employee of the Gary Assessor's Office for a decade, and a citizen who deeply cared about her city, Ms. King was a pillar of service and engagement in our community. Her invaluable contributions to the 4th district and beyond have left an indelible mark, nurturing a legacy that deserves recognition.
To honor Ms. King's work, commitment, and love for Gary, we are calling for the following steps to be taken:
1. Designate the 1500 block of Maryland Street as 'Dorothy King Avenue/Drive'. This tangible recognition will stand as a testament to Ms. King's enduring work in the Gary community and serve as an inspiration for future generations.
2. Proclaim June 16 as 'Dorothy King Day' in Gary, IN. This citywide commemoration every year will remember her service and create awareness about the importance of civic engagement.
3. Designate the southeast corner lot of the 1500 block of Maryland as 'Dorothy King Community Garden Park'. A community garden park - a place of recreation and togetherness, will symbolize the sense of community that Ms. King worked tirelessly to cultivate.
Our grandmother devoted over 50 years of service, lovingly shaping the Gary community, and it is time we held up her name in gratitude. Let's remember and honor Dorothy King’s selfless dedication to the city she loved. Please sign this petition to mark Dorothy King's legacy in the streets, calendar, and green spaces of Gary, IN.
