Honor Chicago Veteran Firefighter David Meyer with Fire Station Renaming
The Issue
Captain David Meyer gave 28 years of his life to the Chicago Fire Department, serving mostly in the busiest firehouses on the West Side. He was a committed firefighter, a respected leader, and an example of someone who truly served the Chicago community. On April 23, 2025, Captain Meyer lost his life in the line of duty when a garage roof collapsed on him while responding to a fire.
This was not just a tragic accident—it was a profound loss for his family, the department, and the city. Captain Meyer is remembered not only for his bravery, but for his quiet service and devotion to the people of Chicago. Whether helping at the scene of a car crash or leading with strength and humility in the firehouse, he embodied the values of selflessness and courage.
Chicago has honored fallen firefighters before by naming firehouses after them. It is only right that Captain Meyer’s name live on through such a tribute. We urge the City of Chicago, Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt, and Mayor Brandon Johnson to name a West Side fire station in honor of Captain David Meyer. Let his legacy inspire future generations of firefighters and remind the city of the sacrifice he made in service to others.
