The issue

We as New Zealanders are proud of our reputation for standing up for Maori rights, women's rights, and even gay rights. But this time we make a stand for the rights of animals. Specifically; their fundamental right to live. The senseless and superfluous slaughter of native creatures in any country is unacceptable to us. While it may be legal in the third world, it is not legal here. And those who engage in such activities eslewhere are not welcome. To us, it counts as a criminal record. To hunt known pests such as possums is one thing - it is better than using 1080 poison. But to hunt such majestic wildlife as a giraffe for no valid reason is completely different. To call hunting "sport" is a fallacy. Allow me to debunk: In sport, all teams or participants are on an even playing field. They are all given the same equipment and must all abide by the same rules. Animals in this case do not have a rifle; nor any defence whatsoever against the hunter's. As such this argument is invalid. In recent weeks we have seen a United States dentist shoot a lion in Zimbabwe - the outrage over which forced him to abandon his business. His own community - including many of his own customers - said he was not welcome back. Likewise, and for similar reasons, we are not prepared to welcome Sabrina Corgatelli in Aotearoa. Given the nature of some comments on social media, it would be best for her own safety to turn her around at the border. We implore you; our elected officials; to take a stand and prove for once that you do represent the people of New Zealand, not corporate America.
