To The Honorable Kate Jones MP Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism and Major Events Monday 20 February, 2017 Dear Minister, At present, air conditioning is funded in the "Cooler School Zones which includes the hottest and most humid parts of Queensland. Outside of the Cooler School Zone east of Roma and Biloela, the provision of air conditioning is a decision for each individual school community." To our school communities this means schools that cannot afford the purchase, installation and ongoing costs of air conditioners in the South Eastern corner of the state are missing out on cool comfortable classrooms for their students and staff. The start of the school year has greeted us with heatwave conditions and thermometers rising to over 40 degrees Celsius in some classrooms. Children and staff have sweltered most days in heat of well over 30 degrees Celsius resulting in irritable, sluggish learners unable to reach their full potential under such oppressively hot and humid conditions. School communities in the most densely populated part of the state are crying out for the Cooler School Zones to extend to cover all of the yet to be funded South East corner of the state. Our children and their teachers should no longer continue to endure heat exhaustion and intense humidity during the long summer months. I respectfully ask you Hon Kate Jones to honour the physical and mental well being of our children by granting the extension of Cooler School Zones in our State of Queensland. We call on our State's government to take measures in providing all unairconditioned classrooms in the South East corner of the state with climate-controlled classrooms to help learners achieve their best.
