Dear supporters, For those of you who have signed up for email updates on this issue*, you will know that Bill C24 has now become law. You will also know that the BC Civil Liberties Association (BCCLA) and the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers (CARL) has committed to fighting these changes in court. Now that Bill C24 has made citizenship harder to get and easier to lose, it has become clear that the next attack on citizenship equality will strike at the very foundations of Canadian identity: to be born on Canadian soil is to be born an equal citizen. This week, the Toronto Star reported on a proposal to eliminate citizenship by birth on Canadian soil (also known as jus soli citizenship, or citizenship “by soil”). In this response, the BCCLA's Carmen Cheung and Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers' Audrey Macklin dispel the myth of any Canadian problem with 'birth tourism'- just as Citizenship and Immigration bureaucrats did when asked for their assessment of the situation.
