We all have different views on what it means to be Canadian. But since part of Bill C-24 went into effect at the beginning of June, Canadians have been divided into first and second-class citizens.
The government thinks its ok to have a two-tier citizenship system, where dual citizens and people who have immigrated to Canada can have their citizenship taken away while other Canadians cannot.
This Canada Day, take a stand for equal citizenship for all Canadians.
What can you do? There are lots of ways you can show your support. If you haven't already, share the petition far and wide. This weekend we broke 100,000 signatures; you can help us reach our next milestone of 150,000!
This Canada Day, show how you feel about Bill C-24 by stamping your Facebook and Twitter profile picture with a 'second-class' stamp.
One of our community members, Yohan Decelles, created this inspired 'second-class citizen' image, and has generously made the stamp free for all to use: http://ow.ly/OX3kS
You can do this with just a few clicks via Twibbon: http://twibbon.com/Support/no-second-class-citizenship
If you'd prefer not to use an app and would like to alter your profile image yourself, you can download the stamp. All you need is an image editor (Picmonkey is a free web-based service that will allow you to 'overlay' your profile picture with the stamp image, and save it to your computer). Download the stamp here: http://i.imgur.com/WoUAify.png
*Please be aware*
We've become aware that scammers are taking advantage of the confusion around Bill C-24, and are calling Canadians pretending to be from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. These scammers are claiming that naturalized citizens could be deported if they don't reapply for citizenship.
Make sure you know the real facts about Bill C-24, who it affects, and in what circumstances. Check our new blog post answering your frequently asked questions: http://ow.ly/OX3zn
The BCCLA will not stand by while the foundations of our citizenship and our Canadian identity are threatened. Thank you for standing with us.
